Martie Holmer's paintings on wood derive from the sculptural works she made throughout the 1980's. These pieces, ranging from the size of a doll to that of a stop sign, were expressively and abstractly figurative, referring to the relationship between inhabitants of the natural world, juxtapositioned with the man-made world. Sometimes these works had a distantly human suggestion, other times a tree or plant. Like our complex world, they interacted as sculptural forms together. From this body of work came the paintings on wood.
