Shown here is the Lingua Series. This series of works on paper emerged from Martie's interest in the act of writing and drawing. In the 1980s, she studied Chinese calligraphy with a master calligrapher. It influenced all her work, from the ink paintings that inspired the sculptural pieces to paintings on wood. Later she would concentrate more on the painted image than the sculptural. An inner calm is needed in making a calligraphic mark, one relies on past study and concentration as the springboard to a spontaneous act. Like singing or making music, it proceeds linearly; but in this case, the cumulative experience is left on the paper - a work made in time.
